Lubicon Lake Band Gasification Project
Snapshot
Construction Timeline: Summer 2025 to Fall 2026
Location: Hamlet of Little Buffalo
Project: New Gas Service
Phase: In Design & Construction
After five years of consultation, we are pleased to share our plans to bring a new natural gas delivery service to the Lubicon Lake Band community.
The natural gas system includes a new gas pressure regulating station south of Simon Lake, which will connect into the NOVA Gas Transmission Line (NGTL) for the gas supply. The natural gas system will also include gas mains along Summerland Road.
This project will be completed in three phases. The first phase involves the installation of gas mains to provide natural gas to the new subdivision development (Phase 1) of residential and commercial developments within the Hamlet of Little Buffalo.
The ‘feeder’ project involves installing a gas feeder main along Summerland Road from the regulating station site to the community of Lubicon Lake Band #453 First Nation and its surrounding area.
The second phase of development (Phase 2) involves installing gas distribution mains and services within the existing community of Lubicon Lake.
Other parts of the project involve the installation of the pressure-regulating station and associated high-pressure connection to the NGTL gas supply. The station and high-pressure lines have been completed as of January 2026. The installation of gas mains within Phase 1 has also been completed.
Installation of the feeder main along Summerland Road to the community and Phase 2 is currently planned for Summer 2026.
Schedule
- Pre-construction activities are underway, and we are engaging stakeholders through various open house events within the community
- Surveying the pipeline alignment and workspace to establish and mark construction limits and to locate other underground utilities (pipelines, cables, etc.)
- Removing and stockpiling topsoil in layers to protect the soil for future use
- Grading and preparing land for construction
- Setting up horizontal directional drilling rigs, machines and support trailers at road and waterway crossing locations
- Pressure testing the new pipe sections
- Connecting the new pipeline to the existing systems
- Commissioning of the pipeline for natural gas distribution services
How this will affect you
- When construction starts, residents in the area may notice an increase in construction activities, noise associated with construction and potentially vehicle traffic in the areas eastward to communities of the Lubicon Lake Band, along Highway 986
- All trails and pathways within the construction route will be temporarily rerouted during construction and will be reestablished in the restoration phase of the project
- We'll be using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to complete a trenchless installation. This involves installing the pipeline underneath existing infrastructure, so there's minimal environmental disturbance and a reduction of construction footprint
- All community protocols will be observed
