ATCO will be conducting periodic field surveys along the transmission pipeline right-of-way in several communities across Alberta. This work helps us maintain safety standards and confirm that the pipeline remains secure and properly covered.
How it affects you
You may notice:
- Crews walking along ATCO’s right-of-way near your property, wearing high-visibility vests and ID
- They’ll use handheld locating tools to measure coverage over the pipeline
- No heavy equipment, vehicles, or excavation will be used
- No disruption to your gas service, property access, or fencing
You may receive a door hanger in advance, notifying you of specific dates for your area.
Why we are doing this
- To confirm the depth of coverage over pipeline sections
- To ensure reliable natural gas service delivery for Alberta communities

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is this survey happening near my land?
A: ATCO is conducting a routine safety check called a Depth of Cover (DoC) survey. It helps confirm that the soil covering the pipeline remains at safe levels and meets regulatory requirements.
Q: Will crews need access to my property?
A: Crews will stay on the designated right-of-way. In rare cases where access near property boundaries is needed, field staff will do so respectfully and without disturbance.
Q: Will this affect my gas service?
A: No. This is a non-intrusive, surface-level walking survey. It will not impact your natural gas service or require excavation.
Q: Who is doing the work?
A: The survey is being completed by Global Raymac Surveys, a trusted ATCO contractor. All crew members will wear high-visibility vests and display clear identification.
Q: How long will the survey take?
A: Crews typically spend only a short time walking each section of the pipeline. Timelines vary by region and are subject to weather and site conditions.
