ATCO's ENERGY DISCOVERY CENTRE

  • ATCO’s Energy Discovery Centre

Commissioned with hydrogen in late May 2024, the Energy Discovery Centre is the first building in North America that is heated by 100% hydrogen. The facility serves several purposes, including providing a space to safely demonstrate emerging hydrogen and energy technologies, and to train our talented team of energy systems professionals on hydrogen and other energy technology. The building will also help facilitate the safe development of hydrogen by connecting industry, policy makers, academia, and the public—demonstrating the opportunity hydrogen presents for Alberta, and the world.

The building features a demonstration space that includes eight technology bays, designed with research, learning, and interaction in mind. This space is set to demonstrate pathways to net-zero by:

    • Providing our partners a forum to exhibit hydrogen and other new energy technologies and applications.

    • Showcasing new appliances and technology from around the world that use pure H2 and natural gas/H2 blends.

    • Bringing cross-industry stakeholders together to discover the possibilities of hydrogen and new energy technology

Molten Metal Pyrolysis Plant Field Pilot

One of the projects that is being hosted at our EDC is a molten metal pyrolysis plant field pilot originally developed by Merida Labs at the University of British Columbia.

This pilot project converts natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon, which can be used as a source of decentralized hydrogen production. Looking to the future, decentralized hydrogen production can be co-located with existing natural gas stations allowing hydrogen to be injected into existing distribution networks which improves accessibility to low-emission fuel sources.
