OUR PROJECTS

Alberta's First Hydrogen Home

  • Alberta’s First Hydrogen Home

Alongside our partner Qualico, ATCO is building a residential home in Sherwood Park, Alberta, to showcase how hydrogen technology can play a pivotal role in the future of home heating in the province, keeping homeowners safe and warm year-round. The home is currently under construction, with plans to connect it to a temporary hydrogen supply in 2024.

With the support of Alberta Innovates, the home will showcase technologies that may be used in a future development in Strathcona County that has the potential to be the world’s largest 100 per cent hydrogen community.

The use of 100 per cent pure hydrogen eliminates all carbon monoxide, which is the largest risk associated with the use of natural gas. Many Europeans are already living in single family homes and multi-family apartments with appliances that are fully certified for 100 per cent hydrogen use.

    Hydrogen Communities

With funding from the Alberta Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, ATCO and our partners at Qualico are also studying the logistics, technology requirements, and other considerations in developing a 100 per cent pure hydrogen community in Strathcona County. This feasibility study represents an important step towards eliminating carbon emissions that are produced when we heat our homes and use hot water. If built, the community will be the world’s largest pure hydrogen community, a home to approximately 85,000 residents.
