Alberta’s First Hydrogen Home
Alongside our partner Qualico, ATCO built a residential home in Sherwood Park, Alberta to demonstrate that pure hydrogen can be used to safely and effectively replace natural gas in a typical residential property in Alberta while eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions associated with burning natural gas.
With the support of Alberta Innovates, the home showcases technologies that could be used to develop an entire new community heated by hydrogen with no carbon emissions.
Using 100 per cent pure hydrogen eliminates all carbon monoxide, which is the largest risk associated with the use of natural gas. Many Europeans are already living in single-family homes and multi-family apartments with appliances that are fully certified for 100 per cent hydrogen use.

Hydrogen Communities
With funding from the Alberta Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, ATCO and our partners at Qualico have studied the technical, logistical, and regulatory considerations involved with developing a 100 per cent pure hydrogen community. This feasibility study is one of several steps being taken to evaluate hydrogen's potential role in reducing emissions from home heating and hot water use.
