Natural Gas Construction

Overview
Natural Gas System Upgrades
Sometimes you will see us in your neighbourhood or within the Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC) completing work to upgrade the natural gas system. This work can be messy and kind of loud, but once we are done we will put things back the way found them.
When we are working in your area it could be part of our Steel Mains Replacement (SMR) project in Edmonton and Calgary, our Plastic Mains Replacement (PMR) project in rural areas, or sometimes we are helping other major projects and moving our lines out of the way. If by chance you do see us working near the ring road (also known as the TUC), we are likely out doing some work on the Urban Pipeline Replacement (UPR) Program.
In most cases if you see our workers or contractors they are probably replacing old distribution lines with new pipelines for continued safe and reliable service for you the customer.
How does this affect you?
If you are going to be impacted by one of our projects, you will be contacted before any work takes place on your property by mail or by phone. ATCO representatives will meet with you to discuss specific impacts. To ensure you have proper notice of the work that will take place ATCO will notify all impacted homeowners prior to any construction activity or service interruptions.
A few things that may happen if we are doing construction near your home or business:
- Potential lane, road, alley or pathway closures
- Increased traffic and construction noise
- Excavation on your property near the gas meter and along boulevard to connect homes to the natural gas system
- Temporary interruptions to your service, this will be arranged in advance with all residents
- Increase in dust from construction
To help ensure public safety, all our excavations that are open and accessible to the public will be supervised or fenced. We still ask that you please be aware of hazards and avoid excavation sites — especially keeping children and pets at a safe distance.
