Bringing Natural Gas to Lubicon First Nation

  • ATCO is proud to announce our plans to develop new infrastructure to bring natural gas to Lubicon First Nation, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to support energy sovereignty in some of the most remote areas of our province. This project is the first of its kind in the area and will pave the way for extending natural gas services to other remote communities.

The project involves the installation of natural gas infrastructure to provide safe and reliable heating solutions to homes in Lubicon First Nation. Currently, residents rely on propane or wood-burning fires for heating, which are not only costly but also pose risks such as inconsistent delivery and increased wildfire hazards. By transitioning to natural gas, the community will see significant savings that can be reinvested in community programs, infrastructure, and local businesses.

    Why It Matters

Access to natural gas will revolutionize the lives of Lubicon First Nation residents. It will provide a stable and efficient heating source, improve living conditions, and support economic development. The project aligns with ATCO's efforts to ensure that all communities have access to the same quality of life and opportunities.

    What’s Next – Community Engagement

On May 7, our ATCO team held an information session in Lubicon to outline the next steps, what to expect, and the benefits of the project. We also addressed the community's questions about the upcoming changes. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for early fall.

Over the next few months, ATCO will also meet with affected landowners and other interested parties within Lubicon Lake Band to discuss project details. Field assessments will continue through this summer to gather information required to finalize project designs and construction will continue through winter 2025.

"We started conversations about this project over six years ago, and it is so exciting to see us move to the construction stage of this project. It has been wonderful working with Lubicon First Nation, and we look forward to bringing this critical infrastructure to help the community benefit."

ATCO has been working with Indigenous communities for decades to help them become more self-sufficient. We’ve formed more than 50 joint ventures and relationships that have generated billions in shared revenue and contributed to the success of projects across the country. Ensuring that Indigenous communities gain long-term sustainable benefits from economic development projects is fundamental to how we do business.

We are proud to be part of this transformative journey and look forward to the positive changes it will bring to Lubicon First Nation and beyond.
